Outside The Box Builders specializes in resilient, high-performance homes designed for the realities of living in California.
We have hands-on experience building with insulated concrete form systems, including Faswall and other ICF construction methods that replace much of the combustible wood framing found in conventional homes.

Because we have worked across so many aspects of construction, we are particularly comfortable with projects where old and new construction need to come together, unusual conditions need to be solved, or the original plan needs some creative thinking.

Custom Decks & Outdoor Living
Outdoor spaces should feel like part of the home.
Decks are one of the things we especially enjoy building because they combine structure, craftsmanship, problem-solving, and design.

Sometimes that means working with redwood, ipe, batu, or other traditional materials. Other projects may call for composite decking, steel framing, concrete, or other durable and noncombustible materials.

We pay particular attention to water management, structural connections, wood protection, railing strength, seismic conditions, and the small construction details that help an outdoor structure perform well over time.
The difference is often in the details that help a structure last for decades, not just years.
And because every property is different, we don’t believe every deck should look the same.
We like finding the unexpected detail, solving the awkward condition, or creating the feature that makes an outdoor space uniquely yours.
Fire Hardening & Resilience Upgrades
You don’t necessarily need to build a new home to make a property more resilient.
Existing homes can often be improved by identifying vulnerable components and replacing or modifying them with more fire-resistant alternatives.
Depending on the property, upgrades may include:
- Exterior siding and trim
- Roofing assemblies
- Ember-resistant vents
- Windows and shutters
- Decks, stairs, and railings
- Fencing and other exterior structures
There is no single product that makes a conventional house completely fireproof.
Materials and methods may include fiber-cement products, noncombustible roofing systems, steel structures, tempered glazing, fire-resistant shutters, and other solutions designed to reduce potential pathways for ignition.
Effective fire hardening comes from looking at the building as a system and addressing vulnerabilities together.
